A rescued book from the trash, the textblock was separated from the cover, missing pages including the flyleaves, missing the tail endband, the head endband was loose, had loose pages, and was torn and folded on a few pages. The cover was torn along the shoulder joints and had paint stains. The textblock spine was missing linings, the spine stiffener in the cover was acidic and weak, and the board corners were delaminating and uncovered.

  • Spine was cleaned with a wheat starch poultice and the remainder of the lining was removed

  • Loose leaf was hinged onto the spine using paste and repair tissue

  • Loose signature was secured with repair tissue hinges

  • Missing pages were recreated with double thickness of cigarette paper and hinged onto the spine

  • Paper folds were humidified and flattened

  • Paper repairs and paper corner reattachment

  • Remaining, but breaking, endband was secured with repair tissue

  • New flyleaves were made with toned wove paper and tipped in

  • New spine linings of document cotton and hahnmuhle

Binding

  • Fraying cloth was consolidated with 3% solution of methyl cellulose

  • Corners were consolidated with wheat starch paste and recovered with toned tissue and remaining cloth

  • Removal of as much as possible of the paint stain using 50/50 mix of isopropanol alcohol and deionized water

  • New tail endband made on with polyester thread, linen, and cord, and stuck onto spine

  • Toned cloth repair of the split hinges

  • New spine stiffener and hollow using manila

  • Recasing in with document cotton
